FIRST CENSUS RETURN

HAVELOCK TOWN DISTRICT DECREASE IN POPULATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. The first return from the recent census was made available to-day by the Government statistician who will have the population figures throughout New Zealand telegraphed to him as they are completed. The first return was from the Havelock town district, which recorded a population of 244, compared with 269 in 1936, a decrease of 25.

The population figures from the census will be inclusive of Maoris. The figures are preliminary and are subject to later amendment. The 1936 figures will be quoted for comparison, and amendments will be made where the boundaries have been changed.
