HOCKEY
INVITATION TO AUSTRALIAN TEAM (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 2. An Australian hockey team is to be invited to tour New Zealand in 1946 if sufficient players of satisfactory calibre are available. This decision was reached at. a meeting of the New Zealand Hockey Association last night. Mr L. Howard Norton, of Auckland, ‘ was elected a life member. The meeting agreed to hold a conference of direct delegates from affiliated associations in Wellington in April, 1946. The association has been endeavouring for some time to have arrangements made for a tour either of India or England by a hockey team from the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The first move in this direction was made in September, 1944, when the official answer was to the effect that consideration would be given ,at the proper time. Since that date the matter has been brought up again frequently, but without result. This morning, however, the secretary of the association received the following telegram from the Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones: —“I have cabled the N.Z.E.F. for some further information, on receipt of which a decision will be made.”
