ACCIDENTAL DROWNING

DEATH OF YOUNG CHILD “ This is a most distressing fatality,” said Mr Bundle, when returning his verdict at the conclusion of the inquest yesterday into the death of Lindsay John Powell, aged one year seven months, whose body was found on Thursday last in a tank of water at the home of his parents, 2 Marne street, Anderson’s Bay.

Maud Gillard, an aunt of the child, said that about 11.45 a.m. on Thursday she noticed her nephew playing near a fowlhouse in the garden. She went into the house, and a few minutes later she was summoned by the child’s mother, who had discovered that the child had fallen into a tank which contained about 18 inches of water. Artificial respiration was applied. and the child was removed to the Dunedin Hospital, where further attempts at resuscitation were of no avail. ~ . Constable Hood said the tank was open at the top, and had been used for watering horses. Leading up x to the tank was a flight of stone steps. The coroner said the accident was one which might have occurred at any time. He returned a verdict of accidental drowning on September 27.
