WELL-INFORMED NORWEGIANS

Contrasting strongly with the distinct lack of knowledge of even the major events in New Zealand's development which has been shown by many highly educated visitors from overseas several members of the crew of the cargo vessel Sgakerrak, now visiting New Plymouth, know a wealth of detail about the Dominion’s history and geography. Facts ranging from the date of arrival of the flpst European immigrants in New Zealand, to the name of the first railway line opened and the date of the first discovery of moa bones were surprisingly common knowledge to several of the crew interviewed. While many of the facts they had evidently been taught at school are unimportant, they served to illustrate the thoroughness of the schooling given Norwegian children.
