CONDITIONS IN THE NORTH LITTLE PEACE OR SECURITY (Rec. 7 p.m.) TIENTSIN, Sept. 30. The Americans entered Tientsin to liberate 29,000 Allied captives, arrest war criminals, guard and care for 20,000 Japanese civilians, and protect United States nationals and property. The Americans will watch. 232,000 Chinese puppet troops between the Yangtze River and the Great Wall, and disarm the Japanese. There has been little peace and security in North China since the Japanese surrendered, reports the Associated Press correspondent at Tientsin. Pitched battles have occurred in the last six weeks between Japanese regulars, supported by Chinese puppet troops, against units who are purported to be from the Communist Eighth Route Army.
