THE DOMINION MONARCH
ARRIVAL AT LYTTELTON (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 1. Carrying more than 500 former prisoners of war and N.Z.E.F. personnel from the Middle East, as well as 1481 Australians, the transport Dominion Monarch was berthed at Lyttelton late this afternoon after a daylight trip from Wellington against a south-west wind. Every siren and whistle in Lyttelton blew continuously for 10 minutes when the big grey liner appeared off the Gladstone pier. She entered the moles at 5 o’clock, and half an hour later was safely berthed. The first troops to come ashore were soldiers for south of Christchurch. Several hundreds of people waited for hours on the cross wharves and the steamer express wharf for the arrival of -the Dominion Monarch, which was scheduled to arrive at 3.30 o’clock. From the Evans Pass highway hundreds also watched the liner steaming majestically up the harbour in a mist.
A rousing welcome home was given the Christchurch soldiers when their train arrived in the city at 7 o’clock. The Dominion Monarch sailed at 7.45 p.m. for Australian ports.
