DIRECTOR OF PUBLICITY

MR J. T. PAUL’S RESIGNATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. The resignation of Mr J. T. Paul, Director of Publicity, was announced to-day by the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, who paid a glowing tribute to Mr Paul’s work in that onerous role.

Mr Paul, who was appointed to the position of Director of Publicity in 1939, was born in Victoria in 1874 and came to New Zealand in 1899, joining the linotype staff of the Otago Daily

Times He was president of the Otago Trades and Labour Council in 1903 and 1904, and was president of the New Zealand Labour Party from 1917 to 1920. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1906, and from 1907 to 1919 he was a member of the Legislative Council, resigning to contest unsuccessfully, the Dunedin South seat From 1924 to 1932 Mr Paul was editor of the Otago Witness, and when that journal ceased publication he remained on the editorial staff of the Otago Daily Times until his appointment as Director of Publicity shortly after the outbreak of war.
