MILTON

CHILDREN’S PEACE CELEBRATION The special day set aside by the Milton authorities for the celebrating of the peace by the children was held in the Toko High School grounds on Friday afternoon, when pupils from the Toko and St.- Joseph’s Schools held a fancy dress parade. The majority of the children were attired in fancy costumes, and as brilliant weather prevailed there was also a large attendance of parents. A short sports programme was held, after which the pupils were each given a bag of eatables, a bottle of soft drink, and ice-creams, the catering arrangements being carried out by Milton Ladies’ Patriotic Committee. The Mayor (Mr C. Keinan) gave a short address to the children, and impressed on them the reasons for the occasion, and expressed the hope that the necessity to hold peace celebrations would never occur again. The following is the list of the prizewinners in the various sections of the fancy dress parade, the judges (Mesdames C. Keinan and W. Grant and Miss H. Hislop) having considerable difficulty in making their awards from the large number parading:— National Costume—A. Hand (Russian), N. Gorton (Arab), Hazel Sanson (Dutch girl), N. Bateman (Gipsy), Margaret Anicich (Chinese). Doreen Cowie (Japanese). . Historical.—Malcolm Gunn (Queen Victoria). Nursery Rhyme.—Rylvia Cockerill and Joy Pringle (Miss Muffet and the Spider). Above Standard IV: David Sumpter (Mussolini), Bill McDonald, Jim Mitchell, Raymond Nicholls, Blair Dickson, Jim Rush (Booze Family), Colin Thornthwaite, John Patterson, Stewart Adam (Bridal Couple and Flower Girl). FREAK LAMB ' Another freak lamb was discovered in the Moneymore district recently. This lamb, one of twins, ’has two heads, four eyes, two mouths, and two tongues, but only two ears. PERSONAL Consequent on the return of her husband from overseas, Mrs Jessie Ravenwood has relinquished her position on the staff of the Milton Motorists’ Refreshment Rooms after nearly three years’ service. On behalf of the proprietor and staff, Mr D. McGillivray presented her with a hanging mirror, and referred to her valuable services and her courtesy, and extended best wishes for her future welfare. BOROUGH COUNCIL The Mayor, Mr C. Keinan. presided at a special meeting of the Milton Borough Council last week. The meeting was called to consider proposals for major works in the near future. A lengthy discussion took place, and it was decided that the Otago Regional Planning Council be notified of the following proposals:—(l) Flood protection; (2) concrete footpath and channeling formation; (3) sewerage and reservoir. These projects will be further considered when more information is forthcoming as to what assistance will be available. WAIHOLA-MILBURN CHURCH* The annual meeting of the WaiholaMilburn Church was held In the Milburn Church, the Rev. E. Brown presiding in the absence in hospital of the Rev. S. T. Nicholls. Greetings were conveyed by Mr Spence (representing the Milton Session) and Captain L. Wilson (the Milton Ministers’ Association). Items were presented by the children; solos by Miss Forsyth, Mrs Wilkinson, Mrs Allfrey, and the Rev. E. Brown; duets by Mrs Carr and Miss G. McGregor, and a recitation by Mrs A. Carr.

The reports of the session, managers, P.W.M.U., Sunday schools, Bible class and Busy Bees were read and adopted. All showed progress in the work of the chuych. At the conclusion of the programme opportunity was taken by Louie Grellett to make a presentation to Miss G. McGregor on behalf of the Sunday school.
