HUNT CLUB MEETING

ISIAY DOWNS SUCCESSFUL

PSALM SCORES EASY WIN

HUNTERS’ FLAT PLATINGS REVERSED

The Dunedin racing season was opened with the Otago Hunt Club’s annual meeting at Wingatui on Saturday afternoon, when a card of good fields provided interesting sport. Fine weather and the prospects of good racing drew a large attendance, and the success of the day augurs well for the meetings which follow on the calendar. The favourable weather had improved the going, and the racing took place on a fairly firm but not fast track.

The Otago Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase attracted a field of 13. but proved to be a chapter of accidents, as seven of the field fell during the race. Islay Downs paid over a-quar-ter of a century, but the win was received with applause principally owing to the popularity of his trainer. The bracket of Major Argosy and Lexia started a good favourite for the President’s Handicap, but Major Argosy drew 21 at the post, and this set him a difficult task. Gold Lance was always prominent and won well. Psalm drew No. 2 at the post for the Tally-ho Handicap, and, finishing on the rails, won with something in reserve.

After the Hunters’ Flat Handicap, in which Boloyna- finished first and Forage second, the Judicial Committee was called together to hear a complaint lodged by Mr C. L. Orbell, one of the owners of Forage, that Boloyna had interfered with Forage a furlong from the winning post. After a long inquiry, the committee decided to reverse the judge’s placings, the race being awarded to Forage, with Boloyna second. R. Heasley, the rider of Boloyna, was charged under rule 289, paragraph 3. with interference, but after consideration of the charge the committee decided that no further action should be taken. The totalisator handled £47,992, compared with £39,696 10s in 1944. The following are the detailed results:
