RETURNING SERVICEMEN CLEAR STATEMENT OF POLICY URGED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 18. “At present we have servicemen coming" back from overseas, some of them expecting their former positions back, only to find that through taxation and other difficulties and hindrances their positions are not available for them,” said Mr J. R. Dench, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, at the annual meeting of the chamber to-night. “We feel that the time has come for the Government to state quite definitely and in clear terms just what is expected of private enterprise, and just what the Government expects to leave to the State machine,” Mr Dench said. “We feel that it is a matter of great urgency, not a matter which can wait for the next election. Many branches of industry and business are standing still because they are awaiting directions from the powers that be. " We feel we have a very good case,” Mr Dench added, “ and that until the Government states its intentions and gives relief there is little that can be done about it.”
