THE PETROL RATION

INCREASE IN AUSTRALIA TYRE POSITION STILL CRITICAL (Rec. 10.40 p.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 5. -Petrol rations will be increased next month by 25 per cent, on September consumption. As the 25 per cent, increase recently ’approved applies to September, the October ration will be 25 per cent, of the basic ration plus 25 per cent. Cabinet made this decision after examining the report by the Minister for Supply, Senator W. P. Ashley, but the Prime Minister. Mr J. B. Chifley, issued a warning that with the termination of lend-lease it is now not merely a question of securing sufficient tanker tonnage to bring increased supplies to Australia, but an examination from the standpoint of dollar exchange. Mr Chifley said the tyre position remains critical, but the reductions in military demands will permit of some improvement in commercial supplies.
