FARMERS’ GRIEVANCES
“ Farmers are mostly an inarticulate class; I feel there is insufficient realisation at this conference not only of the particular problems of farmers which we have been discussing, but of the undercurrents of dissatisfaction which bring the froth, so to speak, to the surface in the form of resolutions at Farmers’ Union conferences," said Mr J. D. Kilgour, during the discussion of a report on land problems at a session of the Dominion conference on Christian order held in Christchurch. The report referred particularly to the disabilities under which country schools laboured, and pointed out that teachers often did merely a minimum of country service before seeking to return to town appointments. Thus there were constant changes of teachers. It should be possible, added the report, for a teacher to be specially trained for country teaching, and to secure adequate advancement of salary and grading while remaining a country teacher.
