NOTES FROM RICCARTON

COMPETITOR TRAINING (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 4. The trial grass track and the plough were in good order this morning, but there was not much fast galloping. Most of the horses who are to race at Ashburton are well forward and with a few exceptions they are under restraint in their tasks. Competitor led Falconbridge in the early part of a six-furlong spin on the grass, but he was not hurried over the final stages, Falconbridge catching him near the post. Competitor is training on nicely for his three-year-old engagements. Essay and The Crofter were mates for six furlongs, but they were doing their work very easily at the finish. Essay goes very quietly in her track gallops now and she should run well in the John Grigg Stakes. Commemorate and Big Top jumped well over six hurdles, but they were not at top speed. Some of the two-year-olds were seen in short sprints, Palm Bearer shaped best, but there were not many serious trials. H. and A. Cutts have had bad luck with the three-year-old filly Fearless. She has ricked a joint and may have to be rested for a few weeks. The latest addition to A. B. Stove’s team is a four-year-old gelding, who will be trained for Mr A. Trowbridge, a West Coast owner. The newcomer has a Southland pedigree, being by Irish Lancer from a Woodend mare. Scotch Tweed, a four-year-old by Tweed 11, has been showing a lot of speed in his work.
