BALCLUTHA

VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE There was a large attendance at the annual meeting and reunion of the Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade. Superintendent G. Munro presided and extended a welcome to four members who recently returned from overseas—Messrs I. and A. Stewart and T. and B. Gold—to Mr J. R. Copland, representing the Fire Board, and to Ex-superintendent McCutcheon. During the evening Mr Copland presented service honours to the following members: Two-year silver bars—Superintendent Munro (who has completed 23 years’ fire service), E. H. Morris (21 years), I. Stewart (16 years), T. Gold (15 years), A. Low and B. Frye (12 years), and R. Stewart (9 years). Fireman Bert Gold was presented with a five-year certificate and a two-year bar, while Firemen A. J. Stewart, B. Mclntyre, and G. Morrison received three-year certificates. Mr Copland announced that Fireman A. Stewart, who had just returned from overseas, had also qualified for a five-year certificate and a two-year bar, and that these would be presented at a later date. He congratulated the recipients, making special reference to the long service rendered by several members. Mr Gordon Sinclair’s offer of a trophy for competition within the brigade was accepted with thanks. During the evening a toast-list was honoured and many items were given. RUGBY FOOTBALL Two matches wfere played at Balclutha on Saturday afternoon. Clutha met Toko in the semi-final of the Third Grade Cup, the latter winning by 20 points 6. Tries for the winners were scored by Morton, Carr, Hood and Hansen (2), while Lockhart converted one try and kicked a penalty goal. Clutha commenced the game with 13 men and finished with 12, a player being ordered off. For the losers, Muir and Washington scored tries. Mr T. Hansen was the referee. A representative Second Grade team played a team of seniors under 20 years of age, and the result was a draw, 3 points all. Play was rather ragged, neither side showing much combination. For the Second Grade representatives Jury scored, while for the seniors a try was secured by McLachlan. Mr T. Tsukigawa was the referee. Crescent and Toko juniors will meet at Milton on Saturday in the final of the Third Grade Cup, and the Clinton and Clutha Second Grade teams will contest the final of the Boyd Cup at Balclutha at 2 p.m. In 'order to give the seniors a match Crescent will play a team representative of all the other senior teams at Balclutha at 3 p.m. -
