WELLINGTON BEATS CANTERBURY
GAME PLAYED IN QUAGMIRE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 5. On a ground that was a quagmire, and in frequent driving showers, Wellington beat Canterbury at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon by 11 points to 6. A feature of the game was the brilliant displays by the full-blacks, Wishnowsky (Wellington) and Callanan (Canterbury), who stopped many dangerous foot rushes. Ingram opened the scoring for Canterbury with a try, which was not converted, and Fitzgerald increased Canterbury’s score with a good penalty goal. With the wind behind them, Wellington attacked strongly in the second spell, Goldstone scoring. Controlling the ball cleverly, the Wellington forwards kept coming at the line wilu hammering foot rushes, and from one of these Elliott scored and Calcinai placed Wellington ahead by adding the extra points. Keeping up the pressure, the Wellington forwards came at the line again, and Wales scored Wellington's third try, which Calcinai failed to convert.
