BOWLING CENTRE
ANNUAL MEETING OF DELEGATES SEASON’S PROGRAMME APPROVED The programme for the 1945-46 bowling season was the principal business dealt with at the annual meeting on Saturday night of delegates to the Dunedin Bowling Centre. Mr E. Longworth presided at the outset, but after the election of officers the chair was assumed by the new president, Mr W. W. Callender. Other officers elected were: Vice-president, Mr W. Clark; and hon. treasurer, Mr W. Johnson. Club delegates were constituted the new executive in accordance with the rules, and Mr D. Leslie was re-elected auditor. Club Levies An increase of 3d per playing member in the levies payable to the centre by clubs was proposed by Mr Clark, who moved that for the coming year the levy be 2s 3d instead of 2s. Among the reasons advanced for the change was the certainty of increased expenditure on the coming centennial in 1948 and the proposal to publish an appropriate booklet in connection wiih it. An assurance was given that the additional levy would be paid into a separate account and specially earmarked for the purpose stated. An increase of 3d for two years, it was stated, would put the centre in a position to meet at least some of the expected increased outlay. The motion was carried unanimously. Saturday Matches
It was agreed that the Saturday shield matches should be continued as previously, and after some discussion the meeting decided by 24 votes to 16 to approve the principle of playing the Holmes Feathers Fours Competition on Saturdays also. Lengthy, consideration was then given to conditions of play. The question of playing the Four-rink Competition in sections was referred to the executive for action, but the meeting decided that there should again be only one entry in the competition from each club. For the Saturday shield competition, it was decided that scoring should be on the single-rink system. There was some vigorous opposition to this proposal expressed in an amendment that the competition be played in sections of three rinks. Mr Longworth, appealing for a trial for the single-rink system said it was now almost a necessity in view of the decision to play the Holmes Feathers on Saturdays. It should be given a tryout for a year at least in the interests of smaller clubs. After a vigorous debate, the proposal for the singlerink system was carried by 26 votes to 12. A suggestion for the restriction of transfers of players from the Holmes Feathers Fours to the Saturday competition was withdrawn after a long discussion. Other Competitions The continuation - was approved for the coming season of Wednesday club matches, the Champion of Champions Competition, the Adess Shield Competition, and the Christmas Pairs, leads and seconds, and Easter tournaments under the auspices of the centre. Proposals for the limiting of eligibility for the leads and seconds’ tournaments occupied the attention of the meeting for about an hour, and evoked at least half a dozen motions and amendments. The chief change urged was the restriction of the tournament to three-year players only, with some delegates' urging a minimum playing experience of five years. The amendments proposed variously that no change should be made or that the whole matter should be left in the hands of the executive. It was eventually agreed that the question should be referred to the executive. Suggestions Rejected Remits forwarded by the St. Kilda Club as follows were rejected on the voices:—(a) That the centre conduct a Doubles Champion of Champions Competition; (b) that any bowler winning five events at centre tournaments and championship competitions be presented with a special badge; (c) that there be instituted a Junior Champion of Champions Competition to be conducted on the same lines as the present Champion of Champions Competition.
