ADVANCE IN CHINA

ENEMY STRONGHOLD THREATENED (Rec. 9 p.m.) CHUNGKING, Aug. 4. Chinese troops have advanced to points 12 and 19 miles west of Chuan Hsien, the Japanese stronghold on the Hunan-Kwangsi railway. The Japanese rushed up reinforcements, and bitter fighting is continuing. ‘Major-general A. C. Wedemeyer, commander of the United States forces in China, announced that Americantrained Chinese forces, including paratroops, would soon launch large-scale attacks against the Japanese. He added that aerial deliveries over “ The Hump” were increasing, but pointed out that their goal was sea communications.
