DEFEAT OF JAPAN

A CO-ORDINATED PLAN

ANGLO-AMERICAN TALKS

(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 3. President Truman and Mr Attlee agreed on a co-ordinated plan for the defeat of Japan which might involve major changes of command in the Pacific, says the Associated Press correspondent on board the cruiser Augusta. President Truman said that from the beginning he resolved to keep the American public fully informed on the tri-partite agreements reached. Accordingly, no secret agreements of any kind were made at Potsdam. The President is preparing a report which he will broadcast to the nation shortly after his return to Washington next week.

The United States Foreign Office issued the following statement: “During the Potsdam conference the British and American Chiefs of Staff conferred daily to perfect plans for the co-ordina-tion of the Anglo-American forces in accomplishing the total defeat of Japanese military and naval forces and securing Japan’s unconditional surrender as early as possible. The British will bring to bear against Japan all their naval, land, and air forces which can advantageouslv be used. The Chiefs of Staff discussed the reallocation of areas and commands in the South-west Pacific and South-east Asia areas. Consideration was also given to the employment in the war against Japan of the forces of other Allied nations' who are at war with- Japan. The Prime Minister and the President approved of the proposals of the Chiefs of Staff.”
