DAYS OF CRISIS

MR CHURCHILL’S INSPIRED LEADERSHIP DOMINION’S APPRECIATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 5. The Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) in a message to Mr Churchill said: “ On the occasion of your reiinquishing of the high and responsible position of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and war leader of the British Commonwealth and Empire. I would like you to know how much your unflinching and inspiring leadership during the trying and difficult, and sometimes even depressing and soul-searching years of the war has meant to the Government and people of New Zealand, and in particular to myself as Prime Minister of our country. “ Differences of political, social and economic principles and outlook, and their consequences, cannot obscure the fact that your mighty services in the fight against Nazi and Fascist tyranny were of incalculable value, and that in mankind’s darkest hour after defeat was heaped upon defeat, your voice was rallying the forces of freedom. “ Your calm, clarion call to stand firm against our enemies, even if that was the last stand, and your fortitude, determination and unwavering certainty of the Ultimate and inevitable victory of our cause as well, as ot its justice, struck an answering chord in the hearts of all free men and women everywhere, and inspired them to fight and work to win the victory. “You have stood forth in these years of unparalleled stress as the indomitable leader of the whole British family of nations. You have placed all British people, and indeed, the whole freedom-loving world immeasurably in your debt. “We shall never forget the unfailing generosity you have shown in referring to the services of New Zealand’s fighting men, and of all our people. For your constant help and courtesy to me personally during many difficult moments of crisis and,, decision, I cannot thank you sufficiently. With kindest regards, P. Fraser."
