THE SUGAR RATION

Sir,—Now that marmalade oranges are available we are told we are not to have extra sugar to make marmalade. This means that the oranges will be wasted. Would it not be better to reduce the breweries’ supply of sugar so that housewives could make marmalade? The breweries seem to get as much sugar as they want to make beer, which is not a necessity. The cake shops have to close on Saturday mornings as they cannot get enough sugar to make cakes to supply the public, which in these days people must buy as they have not sugar with which to bake. The cake shops are an essential, whereas the breweries are not.—l am. etc., Dunedin, August 1. Fair Play.
