NOTES ON THE RACING
MISHAP IN TRIAL HURDLES STEEPLECHASE WON DECISIVELY (Own Reporter) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 5. Gav Fort was made a good favourite for the Enfield Steeplechase, in which Whiphand went out at the first fence. Pink Clover ran out into a big lead and led Extra to the sod wall after the kennels double. Cobalt fell and Valcron refused ai the brush at the top of the straight. After crossing the stand double Pink Clover was about 20 lengths clear, but was chancing some of the jumps. Pink Clover led along the back from Red Glare, Gay Fort, and Extra. Pink Clover fell and Gay Fort took charge at the kennels double and had the race won. I-Ie won by 10 lengths from Red Glare, who was well clear of Edward. Jacksonville, who had a couple of lifes, was well back. Pink Clover would have been in the money with cleaner fencing. Cashmere Plate The first division of the Cashmere Plate was won comfortably by Bruce from Knight Crusader and Western Front, with Niglitstalk and Lady Scholar next. The second division was won in good style by Collegiate from Deep Harmony and Finalist, with Lexia fourth, followed by Thornbridge, Lady Welbeck, and Princess Anne. Trial Hurdles Trouble was started in the Trial Hurdles by Lotto falling at the mile post hurdle, and bringing down Manakore, Lord Broiefort, Courtdress, and Minority. Bali and Boloyna were left in charge, but the latter commenced to tire half a mile from home and Bali and Prince Dolomite led over the last hurdle. Bali stayed on to beat Prince Dolomite by a length. Matapan was next, but the others made a poor showing. Kohara tailed the field throughout. The wiijner paid over half a century. Paparua Handicap Atreus, Periwig, Grand Forest, Salmi, Prince Leighon, and Pensacola were the early leaders in the Paparua Handicap. Pensacola took charge going to the far turn, and led from John o' London, Grand Forest, Royal Heir, and Atreus. Pensacola led into the straight, but Grand Forest wore him down and won by two lengths. Salmi was three lengths away, a length in front of Atreus, with Royal Heir, Lord Darnley, Dercne, Prince Leighon, Periwig, and John o' London next Grand National Steeples
The pen went through the names of Khurja, Strip, and Albino for the Grand National Steeplechase. Kanui Te Pai started a slightly better favourite than Foxiana, and Master Meruit was a close third choice. Foxiana jumped into the first fence, but his rider made a good recovery, including finding his irons again. Steward fell at the first of the stand double, and going into Cutts’s fence Master Meruit and Foxiana were leading Kanui Te Pai, Dauber, Tenorman, and Kilmanagh. Foxiana led along the back and over the kennels double from Tenorman and Master Meruit, with Kanui Te Pai, Dauber, and Kilmanagh next. At the stand double for the second time Foxiana, Tenorman, Master Meruit, Kanui Te Pai, and Dauber were showing the way. Ramillies ran off at Cutts’s fence, and the others continued on over the kennels double, but Tenorman came down at the sod wall which follows, and Kanui Te Pai also fell at the same jump. Foxiana led on from Master Meruit, who was going well. Master Meruit took charge and had the race well won after landing over the second last fence. He landed safely over tire final fence, and came on to win comfortably by 10 lengths from Dauber,
who beat the struggling Foxiana by a neck. Abbey Lu and Ktlmanagh also completed the course. Sydenham Hurdles Flying Spy won the Svdenham Hurdles full of running. The Vulture, Flying Spy, Maggiore, Knight Commander, and Greek Effort was the order at the stand hurdle. The Vulture fell at! the mile post, where Maggiore also fell, and Boolamskee lost his rider. Flying Spy was well clear going to the far turn from Mynet, Greek Effort, Abdicate, and Arabian Night in a strungout field. Flying Spy kept clear and won by three lengths from Arabian Night, who finished on well from t'he home turn to beat Greek Effort by four lengths. Abdicate was next, followed by Mynet, Moderate, Knight Commander, Renascor, and Good Armour, who made a poor showing. The Dude fell at the last hurdle. The Winter Cup
Platform was the only absentee on the card for the Winter Cup. Royal Flight was made about a £I2OO better favourite than Ramicourt, and there was strong support for Da Vinci, Gulf Stream, Reorapa, and Caithness. The rest of the field showed long prices. Tring and Sphere were slow to move when the, barrier rose to a good line. Ramicourt, Da Vinci, Air Ace. and Kaitoa began well and so did Royal Flight on the rails. Reorapa, and Gulf Stream were in front at the sixfurlong post from Da Vinci, Air Ace. Piccolo, Kaitoa, Burberry, Royal Flight, and Ramicourt. Coming round the top Reorapa and Gulf Stream were still in charge from Da Vinci, Air Ace, Burberry, and Kaitoa, with Piccolo, Ramicourt, and Royal Flight in close attendance. Once well into the straight Reorapa, Kaitoa, Gulf Stream, Da Vinci, and Burberry were racing in close order, and Royal Flight appeared on the rails. Gulf Stream and Da Vinci were in charge inside the distance, and Royal Flight was coming with a strong run, with Sphere, Tring, Caithness Lord Advocate, and Piccolo fighting on. ’Royal Flight stayed on well under vigorous riding to beat Gulf Stream by a length. Da Vinci, under the whip, was two lengths away third, a length in front of Caithness, who was followed by Tring, Lord Advocate, Sphere, Piccolo, Capronella Burberry, First In, Salary, Air Ace, Reorapa, Lord Dundonald, and Kaitoa. Avonhead Handicap The card was concluded with Eagle Flight beating Weld Cona in a close finish in the Avonhead Handicap. Arco was two lengths away third. The early leaders were Great Divide, Peter Gazelle, and Double Cross. Peter Gazelle was clear coming round the top, but stopped at the home turn, where Double Cross, Sir Bernard, Lex, Desert Victory, Peculate, and Plutocrat were prominent. Weld Cona drew up bn the outside and Eagle Flight on the rails, and a short head win went to the latter. Arco was two lengths away, with Royal Duce, Legal Right, Peter Gazelle. Carthage, Koa Manu, and Plutocrat following.
