MILITANTS IN CHARGE
AUSTRALIAN TRADES UNIONS SIGNIFICANT VOTE AT CONGRESS (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 14. A test vote at the Congress of the Australasian Council of Trades Unions has indicated that the militants are now in charge of the proceedings. A motion by the moderate executive of the council to defer proposed admendments to the constitution was defeated by 193 votes to 100. The A.C.T.U. is the highest trade union authority in Australia, representating about 1,000,000 workers. The congress has decided to press for an increase in the basic wage by Government regulation instead of by arbitration. The A.C.T.U. will seek to have a prosperity loading of six shillings a week and a war loading of six shillings a week made an integral part of the basic wage. The Congress has also decided to call on the Federal Government immediately to liberalise and amend the wage-pegging regulations.
The militants’ nominee (Mr F. Thornton, a Communist delegate for the New South Wales Ironworkers), has been elected unopposed as an Australian delegate to the next Worl 1 Trade Union Congress to be held in Paris in September.
