ITALY’S PROBLEMS
THE SOCIALIST SOLUTION PROCLAMATION OF REPUBLIC (Rec. 8 p.m.) ROME, June 14. Crown Prince Umberto consulted political leaders yesterday about the formation of a new Government. The Socialist leader. Signor Pietro Nenni, warned the Prince that civil war would be avoided only if he pledged himself to stand by the result of a popular vote regarding the future form of the State. Signor Nenni told Prince Umberto that he intended to initiate an all-out Republican campaign. “ Prince Umberto did not seem surprised,” Signor Nenni later told newspapermen, ” saying that he, too, desired to avoid civil war. I 'told the Prince what I have always said publicly, namely, that the only solution to Italy’s problems was the .proclamation of a republic.” The six major Italian parties have invited Signor Ferruccio Parri to become the new Prime Minister, says the Rome correspondent of the British United Press. If he accepts the parties will submit his name to Prince Umberto as their agreed choice. Signor Parri, a former journalist, is a member of the Action Party. He was deputy commander of the partisan army in Northern Italy.
