BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS

ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY The eleventh annual meeting of the Dunedin Voluntary Blood Transfusion Society was held at the Public Hospital last night. The chairman (Mr N. C. Speight) presided. The report stated that 78 members had qualified for the society’s medal (five donations of blood), 8 had qualified for the first bar (10 donations), 2 for the third bar (20 donations), 1 for the fourth bar (25 donations), and 1 for the fifth bar (30 donations). Since the inception of the society 11 years ago 3420 donations of blood had been given by donors—an outstanding record of service. A Wonderful Service

Moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said that when the society commenced it was aimed to secure 50 donors. That number had been difficult to obtain, as people did not realise the value of transfusions. The. public attitude, however, had changed, and now the society had 700 donors, an extremely good indication of the helpfulness of the people of Dunedin. He congratulated the donors.

The work of the society did not receive much publicity, but the donors were giving a wonderful service, said Dr D. G. McMillan, who seconded the adoption of the report. He commented that the majortiy of the donors appeared to be women and it would seem that their sense of civic responsibility was more highly developed than that of men. The report was adopted.
