WANGANUI GAS SUPPLY
SHUT-DOWN NARROWLY AVERTED (P.A.) •. WANGANUI, June 8. Gas is being rationed in Wanganui because the collier Holmlea has been unable to leave Greymouth with a cargo of 600 tons. The coal is badly needed by the City Gas Department. As the weather has improved, it is hoped that the vessel will be able to leave to-night and that the coal she carries will be available to the gasworks by Monday, , _ In the meantime the City Gas Department has been scouring the countryside in an effort to secure coal supplies from other centres. Marton and Hawera have each been able to send small supplies, and two trucks may arrive from Wellington to-morrow. These supplies have enabled the gas department to avoid closing down the works altogether over the week-end. It is likely now that the supply of gas will not be cut off to-morrow, but the manager of the gasworks, Mr W. ,T. Stone, is not optimistic in regard to Sunday. Both the city newspapers have had to install standby gas plants to enable them to continue publishing.
