BANANA SHIPMENT ARRIVES SMALLER APPLE DELIVERIES A shipment of bananas arrived during the week and turned out in better condition than was anticipated. The shipment of Australian navel oranges is not yet to hand but is expected to reach the market shortly. Only very small lots of pears have come to hand and have had to be disposed of by ballot. „ _ , . A small shipment of New Zealand lemons arrived during the week. The tomato season is now drawing to a close, and the fruit coming forward is showing a want of colour. The last of the Gros Colmar grapes came on to the market during the week. Chinese gooseberries and tree-tomatoes are still arriving from the north in small lots, but no passion fruit reached the market during the week. Apple deliveries are now slackening off to some extent. A lot of the’fult is lacking in colour and is hard to place. Well coloured lines have the better inquiry.
The Vegetable Market
The market for cabbages and cauliflowers remains firm. Heavier supplies of swedes have come forward and prices are a little easier. Very light consignments of lettuces have reached the market and the quality is not good. Pumpkins and marrows are still arriving in large quantities and are meeting with a fair demand. Brussels sprouts have been in good supply, and prices increased slightly this week. Celery and leeks are in short supply. Artichokes from Central Otago were on the market this week. Carrots and parsnips are arriving in suffeient quantities to meet the keen demand, and potatoes are still short of requirements. Wholesale Prices Wholesale prices are as follows; Apples: Delicious, 4s to 6s 6d per case; Jonathans, 4s to 7s 6d per case; other dessert, 4s to 7s 6d per case; DUnn’s, 3s 6d to 4s 6d per case; other cookers, 4s to 5s 6d per case (all cases 6d extra). Pears, 10s 3d to 12s 3d per bushel case (5d extra for cases). Lemons: New Zealand, 19s per case (town), 18s 3d per case (country); Australian, 37s per case (town), 36s per case (country). Bananas, green, 24s per case. Passion fruit, to 22s 6d per case. Tomatoes: Hothouse, 2s to 2s 5d per lb; outside-grown, 4d to Is per lb. Cape gooseberries, to 1s 6d per lb. Chinese gooseberries, to Is 6d per lb. Tree tomatoes, to Is 6d per lb. Grapes: Gros Colmars, 3s to 4s 6d per lb.
Lettuces: Choice, to 3s per dozen; others, Is per dozen. Cauliflowers: Choice, 8s to 12s per sack. Cabbages: Savoy, 6s to 7s per sack; Carrots, to 10s 3d per cwt. Parsnips, to 15s 3d per cwt. Swedes, to 2s 6d per sugar bag. Leeks, to lOd per bundle. Celery, 8s to 10s per dozen heads. Artichokes, to 3d per lb. Spinach, to 2s Eer dozen. Spring onions, to Is 6d per unch. Marrows, to lid per lb. Pumpkins, lid per lb. Potatoes, £9 to £lO per ton. Onions, £lB per ton.
