FOOD AND SHELTER
GREECE’S URGENT NEED (Rec, 11 p.m.) LONDON, May 28. Greece is facing an emergency need for food and shelter for the people, and means to enable the country to live again. Stating this, Mr John Sofianopoulos. the Greek Foreign Minister, said the food sent by the U.N.R.R.A. is insufficient. An ironic aspect is that many Americans want to send packages of food, but are unable so owing to lack of shipping, while that part of the Greek merchant fleet still afloat is in the service of the Allied Governments carrying food to other countries. Greece feels that rectification of boundaries is necessary for her safety. Her territorial claims include the Dodecanese Islands, Northern Epirus, and a strip of Southern Bulgaria touching Macedonia and Thrace. The Dodecanese still have an almost entirely Greek population in spite of Italy’s efforts to colonise them. Northern Epirus is likewise claimed on the ground that the people are overwhelmingly Greek.
