WHITTLED DOWN
JAPANESE SEA POWER
4,500,000 TONS DESTROYED
RUGBY, May 26. Submarines have all but severed Japan from her former possessions, said Admiral Nimitz. disclosing to-day that his submarines sank 2,000,000 tons of Japanese shipping in the past year. Since the beginning of the Pacific war over 1100 Japanese vessels have been sunk, totalling 4,500,000 tons. Giving details of the destruction visited on Japanese sea power he said: “ Between December 7, 1941, and May 5 of this year our submarines alone have sunk a total oi 126 enemy warships, including four carriers, 14 cruisers, and 53 destroyers. They have sunk 993 non-combatant ships. The total of Japanese vessels sunk is 1119. This, I need hardly add, is a conservative estimate. To-day no enemy warship or merchant ship can venture upon the waters of the Pacific without a well-grounded fear in the hearts of the men that they will never return to the home base.”
