SWEPT BY GALE
AUCKLAND AGAIN SUFFERS ABNORMALLY HEAVY RAINFALL (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 28. Another south-westerly gale swept Auckland to-night, leaving a trail of damage to add to the trouble caused by Sunday night’s storm. Claps of thunder and flashes of lightning again accompanied the gale, and there were heavy squalls of rain and hail. The falls of rain during the 24 hours to nine o’clock this morning brought the fall for the month to 7.80 in, or 2.60 in more than the average.
■ No sooner had the Power Board and telephone trouble men repaired the ravages of the previous storm and prepared themselves for an easier night, than the next gale brought a new crop of dislocations caused by falling trees, crossed wires, and the blowing of fuses. Many a harassed housewife worrying over the gas shortage suddenly found the power failure a further factor to fight.
It was small wonder that the telephone and power services were affected, for the gale on Sunday night reached a maximum velocity of 64 miles an hour and to-night 56 miles an hour. Every district had its troubles with the telephone service.
