The acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting close on Tuesday. Amorlad has grown in favour for the Elloughton Handicap. The Nightmstrch filly Nightwink recently strayed on to the Middlemarcli railway line, and met with fatal injuries through being struck by a train. A sticker attached to the entry forms for the Manawatu Hunt meeting reads: — “To fill in details (breeding, owner s name, trainer’s name, colours) is five minutes’ work for you, 15 minutes’ for us. Time is precious, labour short. Make this your good deed for the day and fill in all details.” , , ~ The Great Northern Steeplechase candidate Khurja fell at the final fence in the Te Rapa Steeplechase on Saturday last, and injured a hind leg, necessitating veterinary attention. The injury may keep him off the tracks for the best part of a month, and so it was decided to return him to Hawke’s Bay. . Since W. J. Broughton first topped the list of riders in the 1936-37 season he has ridden 448 winners. In the seasonal ust concluding Broughton has won 43 epees. E. V. Dye is next with 28, and L. J. Ellis third with 24. These three are followed by H. N. Wiggins 23, L. J. Clutterbuck 21, C. T. Wilson 19, G. F. Hughes 18. K. Nuttall 16, and W. J. Mudford 15. As Required, who is top-weight in the Levels Hurdles at Timaru, went close to winning an important double when he won the Grand National Steeplechase and followed with a second in the Grand National ’Hurdles. As Required is engaged in the Ot3go Hurdles, to be run on the first day of the Dunedin winter meeting, and in the Greenfield Hurdles and the Dunedin Steeplechase on the third day. The following horses which have been nominated for the Dunedin winter meeting hold engagements at Timaru:—As Required, Inscrutable, Bright Feather, Boolamskee, Royal Chorus, Forage, Double Light, Valcron,. Arabian Night, Kohara, Alpine, Jacksonville, Prize Ring, Tenorman, Drummer Boy, Roman Son, Riding Home, Air Ace, Strip, Tatting, Robot, Great Coon, Pedantic, Powys, Royal Flight, Hurry Home, Bowmoro, Listen In, Royoney, Hunting Charm, Plutocrat, Salary, Siegform, Night Fighter, Tikakoura, Velvet Slipper, Sphere, Foxchase, Amorlad, Cobalt, and Manakore. The running at Timaru will therefore be followed with more than the usual interest.

W. Murray, a jockey of Awapuni, broke a leg as the result of a fall from Northfield at the first fence in the Combined Club Steeplechase at Marton on Saturday last. Northfield, owned by Mr H. J. Stanbridge, Wellington, was following the leaders at the first fence. When he fell, Murray tried to scramble to safety and was struck by a following horse. Murray was treafed on the course by ambulance officers and removed to hospital. The Rules of Racing enact that authority for payment of dividends shall not be given until the expiration of. the period (five minutes) allowed for the making of objections, and that such authority shall not be given until an objection lodged is decided. The Dunedin Jockey Club is moving to have stewards invested with power to authorise payment on the first horse, in cases where the first horse is not involved, before any protest has been decided. The remit is a commonsense one (says the Timaru Herald), and could be widened in scope to apply to second horses also when only a third horse is implicated.
