At Victoria Park (Adelaide) the double totalisator recently paid £305 for a 5s ticket.
Owing to unsoundness Young Charles has been retired from racing. His wins include the Trentham Hurdles and the Century Hurdles. Foxiana is reported to be a doubtful starter in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and unsoundness may terminate his racing career. Handicaps for the first day of the Dunedin winter meeting are governed by a rehandicapping condition which renders winners liable to an increase of weight. Rain set in at Timaru on Friday, and greatly increased in volume during the night, with the result that the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting had to be postponed. Racing has progressed at a great rate since it was restored in South Australia. The Adelaide Cup to-day is worth £3500, and the Goodwood Handicap (six furlongs) £2OOO, record figures for the State. In forwarding to the Racing Conference proposed dates of race meetings for the coming new season all clubs have applied for the same number of days as in the current season, but have submitted additional dates to be considered “ if restrictions be lifted.’’ These applications (says the Press) will be dealt with at the annual meeting of the Racing Conference on July 13, but no doubt a statement from the Minister of Internal Affairs regarding the extent of next season’s racing will be made known long before that date. It Is confidently expected in racing circles that the bulk of the suspended permits will be restored.
