ON BOUGAINVILLE

AUSTRALIANS OVER RIVER MELBOURNE. May 18. Australian units in Southern Bougainville, supported by artillery and tanks, crossed the main ford of the Hongorai River, and have established a firm beach-head on the opposite bank. The Japanese facing the Australians in this sector withdrew in face of the attack without firing a shot. The collapse of the Japanese resistance is due largely to the destruction of two enemy artillery positions by Australian guns and bombers of the R.N.Z.A.F. In New Guinea Japanese forces south of Wewak Peninsula are fighting frantically to stem the advancing Australian Sixth division. The Australian force, moving in a wide circle, threatens to cut off the Japanese retreat into the Prince Alexander Mountains, south-east of Wewak.
