GRAIN AND PRODUCE
SMALL CEREAL CONSIGNMENTS
GOOD DEMAND FOR SEEDS The continuance of weather unsuitable for harvesting lias restricted the inflow of cereals to local stores during the week. Only odd lines of wheat have come to hand, and the quality is on a par with earlier deliveries. A few areas of wheat still remain unharvested on the Taieri and in South Otago, and growers are awaiting conditions suitable for heading, but it is doubtful if a sufficiently long spell of fine weather to enable Ihe grain to be saved by this means is likelv at this time of the year. Sufficient lines of wheat are being made available for fowl wheat requirements, and although this market continues firm, it is not anticipated that consumers will at any stage during the year be unable to secure their
i requirements. Flour, Bran, etc. Flour: 200’s, £l3 15s 6d; 100’s, £l4 12s • 6d; 50’s, £l4 17s 6d; 25’s, £ls 7 S 6d. Pollard, £6 15s per ton of 20001 b. Bran, £5 5s per ton of 20001 b. Oatmeal: 2001 b sacks, £25 10s 6d per ton; 251 b loose, £27 0s 6d; 251 b packed in sacks of eight, £27 10s 6d. Oats Ample oats are available for all needs, and the shipping demand from the North Island is now much easier, although the market continues firm, with a good demand for white oats. There is an easier tone in respect to both Duns and black , oats. Chaff continues firm, with a demand for good bright oaten sheaf quality. Distributors are drawing their requirements from local supplies as well as from Canterbury. Prices remain unchanged in the vicinity of £7 10s per ton, ex truck sacks extra. Potatoes Potato digging operations have now been suspended tor a fortnight in this district, and as a consequence very few lines have been coming to hand, and the market is bare of immediate supplies. Crops generally in the Otago district are disappointing, and present indications are that local merchants will have to draw on Canterbury earlier than is customary. It is expected that ample supplies of potatoes will be available from the Waimate and Willowbridge districts. The price, which is regulated by the Government, is the same as that which ruled last year. Seeds The demand for almost all lines of seeds is buoyant, although it is felt in some quarters that maximum prices have novv been reached. The germination results of both perennial and Italian rvegrass continue to be unsatisfactory, the average germination for perenniaf being y er y ..’TJbCb below normal. Cocksfoot is still in keen demand, and the
price ruling to-day is probably higher ™ ap it has previously been in New Zealand. White clover yields have been disappointing. but there should be ample seed for domestic requirements, with the possibility of an exportable surplus. Ciested dogstail, Chewings fescue,* and brown top all remain firm at recent .rates. Various Commodities Wholesale prices are as follows: Chaff: Up to £7 10s per ton, ex truck.
