THE AMERICAN ARMY

PROPOSED EXPENDITURES (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 17. The World Telegram’s Washington correspondent says the proposed army expenditures provide for spending 50.000,000 dollars a day for the next 20 months. The total is only 31 per cent, less than if the European war was not over. The army explained that tanks, planes, and guns were still being built because the army wants to send them to the Pacific immediately, instead of waiting several .months for equipment from Europe to reach the Pacific. This costs more* but it will shorten the war and save lives.
