AMERICAN CASUALTIES

MILLION MARK PASSED . WASHINGTON, May 17. American combat casualties reached 986,214 to-day, meaning that the actual total, including thousands not yet transferred to the records, has passed the million mark. Mr R. E. Patterson, Under-secretary for War, told a press conference that the Americans in the Pacific had killed about 360,000 Japanese since Guadalcanal', but not including Okinawa. Mr Patterson has just returned from Europe. He said the Germans were well fed and well clad.
