FODDER SHORTAGE
NEW SOUTH WALES STOCKS (Rec. 0.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, Apl. 26. Fodder stocks in New South Wales have reached a critically low level, said the State Minister of Agriculture, Mr E. H. Graham, to-day. No fodder was now available for any but stud stock. The position had become so serious that it could be relieved only by the importation of large quantities of fodder from overseas. The New South Wales State Government has asked the Federal Government to import fodder urgently from New Zealand, Tasmania, and Canada. Since 1000 tons of meadow hay en route from New Zealand to New South Wales to relieve the fodder shortage caught fire on a ship in mid-ocean and was destroyed, shipping companies have not accepted further consignments because of the great fire risk, Mr Graham said to-day. Only one shipment of 350 tons of New Zealand meadow hay was safely delivered here. Negotiations were, however, proceeding through the New Zealand High Commissioner in Australia, Mr J. G. Barclay, for a resumption of shipments, now that the fire risk has been lessened by the drying-off of the fodder.
