FOOD FOR BRITAIN

APPEAL TO OTAGO WOMEN NATIONAL COUNCIL’S SCHEME A plan for making voluntary donations of food so that the supplies thus obtainable might be given to the women of Britain was launched by the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women some weeks ago, and already a good stock of tinned goods has been received at the Garrison Hall, the use of which has been granted by the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council. Mrs A. A. Fairbairn, president of the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women, and Mrs W. K. Cameron, vice-president, informed a Daily Times reporter yesterday that the branch had submitted the proposal to the council some weeks ago. The scheme had been well supported, and when it was referred to the Dominion president (Miss M. G. Havelaar), she had expressed her wholehearted approval and had promptly sought permission from the Acting Minister of Customs (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) for the export of the goods. This had been granted, and letters were despatched to the British Ministry of Food and the president of the National Council of Women in Great Britain, asking for their cooperation in the matter of distribution. Replies were now awaited. In the meantime, the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women has arranged shipping space for the goods, and it has also been in touch with the Customs Department in regard to the matter. The goods will be packed in cases similar to those used for the despatch of gift parcels, and an appeal is being made for contributions of all kinds of tinned foods, and particularly dried milk or condensed milk, jam, lamb and green peas, also cake or sweets in tins. It is emphasised that the tins should be sealed. Contributions in cash will also be welcomed. Donations may be left at the Garrison Hall between 9 a.m. and noon and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. each day. A meeting of the Mayoress s Committee of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council will be held at 3.30 on Monday afternoon in the Garrison Hall to consider the scheme with the object of arranging for full co-operation between the Mayoress’s Committee and the National Council of Women. All the women of Otago will be invited to make contributions.
