A number of East Taleri residents, with Mr A. Miller as spokesman, visited " The Holmes" farm recently and presented Miss Jenny Allen with a well-filled purse and handbag on the occasion of her departure to the North Island. The members of the Austral-Glrton Club were hostesses at the Combined Exgirls’ Service Group meeting held at tire Otago Pioneer Women’s Memorial Hall last Tuesday, when Mrs Cowie welcomed about 50 members. During the evening items were given by Mrs Brathwaite and Miss Heather Smith. A vote of thanks to the hostesses and performers was proposed by Miss Mary Anderson. The first monthly social afternoon arranged under the auspices of the St. Leonards-Burkes Ladies’ Patriotic Committee was held on Tuesday. Mrs HillScully presided. An enjoyable musical programme was presented by Mrs A. Newey’s ladies’ choir. Elocutionary items were given by Mrs D. Dawson, Mrs C. Dawson, and Mrs A. Newey. Letters from local servicemen overseas were read by the secretary. As usual, wool was distributed.

A delightful social under the auspices of the Mid-Otago Federation of Women’s Institutes was held in Victoria Hall last Friday. The Mayoress (Mrs D. C. Cameron) attended and some 160 members were present. A varied programme given by several institutes included a bracket of items by the Karitane Maoris, and the " Teddy Bears’ Picnic" by the Macandrew Bay W.I. The Broad Bay choir gave two numbers and songs were given by Miss Margreta Smith, Mrs Dunlay and Mrs Drain. Dances and a game were enjoyed by all. Supper was served. The Logan Park Croquet Club closed its season on Saturday. There was a large attendance of members, honorary members, and friends. Afternoon tea was served, after which the prizes won during the season were presented as follows by the president, Mrs McKinlay:— A Grade Championship and the Stanley Smith Cup, Mr G. Metcalf; B Grade Championship, Mrs Knox; Squire Cup. Mrs Lamb; B Grade Doubles, Mrs Lamb and Miss Flynn. Winners of the competitions held during the afternoon were Mesdames Anderson, Purdie, Burk, Wilkinson, and Hunter. The grocery competition was won by Mrs Peterson.

Members and honorary members of the Watea Croquet Club were the guests of the president, Mrs T. Shaw, when the lawns were closed for the season on Saturday afternoon. Prizes won in the club competitions were presented as follows: A Grade champion, Mrs S. P. Knox; runner-up, Mrs J. Robertson; Handicap Singles, Mrs J. J. Henry; runner-up, Mrs Sewell; B Grade champion, Mrs D. Chisholm; runner-up, Mrs Crum: Handicap Singles, Mrs C. P. Keen; runner-up, Mrs A. Rayner; Mixed Doubles. Mesdames Pickering and Mercer. Afternoon tea, competitions and games concluded a successful function.

On Monday evening at the Kalkorai Kindergarten, the first 1945 Mothers' Group meeting of the Dunedin Free Kindergartens was held. There was a large attendance, about 200 mothers being present. The principal of the Dunedin Kindergartens, Miss Dutliie, welcomed Mrs D. Smeaton. the new president of the Kindergarten Association, and presented her with a spray of flowers. An interesting talk was given by Miss Vera Hayward, followed by an excellent entertainment, items being provided by each kindergarten. Supper brought the evening to a close. The residents of Mosglel entertained Dr Gatman in St. Luke’s Hall on Saturday evening prior to her leaving for Dunedin. Valedictory speeches were made by the Mayor (Mr W. P. Hartstonge) and Mr Bremner. Included among those present were the parents of the guest of the evening (Professor and Mrs Hunter). Dr Gatman was presented with a cheque and a parting gift. Both Dr Gatman and Mrs Hunter were presented with floral bouquets, and friends provided an entertaining programme. Supper was served. Dr Gatman briefly returned thanks. Professor Hunter also replied on her behalf, expressing thanks for th; appreciation shown of his daughter’s work in Mosgiel. At the fortnightly meeting of the Business and Professional Women’s Club held in Tudor Hall on Monday, Miss Kathleen Falconer gave a talk on “ Theatres Abroad.” Miss Falconer described Theatre Land, In the West End of London, comprising some 47 theatres in a very small area, including four favourites —Drury Lane, famous for drama, the Open Air Theatre, in Regents Park, for Shakespearian plays, The Old Vic, beloved by all those interested in the theatre, and the Albert Hall, known for marvellous music. Lectures given by famous actors and actresses, and attended by Miss Falconer, proved of immense value in her studies. Time apart from studies was spent to advantage in visiting places of interest. A visit to the Aldershot Tattoo was a never-to-be-for-gotten event, the music, marching, lighting, and grouping being marvellous. The talk was listened to with the greatest interest.
