YACHTING

VAUXHALL CLUB'S RACES The final yacht races of the Vauxhall Power Boat and Sailing Club's season were sailed on Saturday afternoon in conditions that were the reverse of pleasant, the competitors having to contend with heavy rain squalls and a cold south-east breeze. In spite of this, no fewer than 14 boats took part in the Allcomers’ Race lor the Vauxhall Cup. As the race was sailed under the sealed handicap system there were some lively moments at the start when the majority of the fleet crossed the line together on the short beat to the windward mark of the triangular course. The breeze was fairly gusty, and the boats made good time round the course, Shadow being first home. Eileen sailed a good race to finish second in actual sailing time. Shadow was beaten into second place on corrected time, the race going to Boojum, off the 15-minute mark, while Tere, a Takapuna-class boat, with a handicap of 25 minutes, took third place on corrected time. The results were as follows: — Boojum (A. Cormack), 15min, 3hr 40min 40sec 1 Shadow (D. Ritchie), scr, 3hr 43min lOsec 2 Tere (T. Schofield), 25min, 3hr 45min 35sec 3 Also started: Heather (6min), Eileen <6min), Avenger, Eunice (7min), Welcome, Koneke, Lady Luck (9min), Annette (lGtmin), Sunray (15min), Audrey (20min), and Marie (25min). Tauranga Class Race A contest for 7ft 6in yachts of the Tauranga class was also held during the afternoon, the course being a short windward and leeward one parallel to the road, so that the diminutive competitors could be under the eye of the officials in case of mishaps. Four of the small craft were present, but only three crossed the line, a Port Chalmers entry, sailed by W. M. Camp, withdrawing after having started well behind the other three. J. Thomson, sailing Gust, handled his boat well, and won by about eight minutes from Jill, sailed by P. Brown, who was a few minutes late at the start.
