MOUNT RUAPEHU

SPECTACULAR DISPLAYS STEAM UP TO 6000 FEET (Special) AUCKLAND, Mar. 27. Mount Ruapehu yesterday gave its two most spectacular displays since the present activity commenced. The first occurred shortly after 10 o'clock in the morning, when clouds of steam were shot high in the clear air in an eruption which lasted a few moments. Even more impressive was the display at about 1.15 in the afternoon. For five minutes steam was gushing up to a height of 6000 ft, forming a huge cloud which did not dissolve for about a quarter of an hour. Residents of Taupo had an excellent view of the displays and many gathered on the lakeside to enjoy the spectacle. The sky was clear of cloud and visibility was exceptionally good.

Apart from these two displays, the mountain was quiet throughout the day and no noise was heard at the Chateau. No ascents of the mountain were made yesterday.
