OBITUARY

MR W. EASTON The death -occurred yesterday of Mr William Easton, who was for a number of years general manager of the Otago Daily Times Company. Mr Easton was associated wjth this newspaper for nearly 53 years, joining the commercial staff at an early age and rising to the positions of accountant, manager, and finally general manager on the death of Sir George Fenwick in 1929. On his retirement from the company’s service in June, 1941, the directors of the company passed a resolution expressing their appreciation of a notable record of devoted service. Mr Easton was for a term chairman of the United Press Association of New Zea-

land, and represented New Zealand overseas as a delegate on behalf of newspaper interests during visits to England and Honolulu. As a member of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of New Zealand he served on several of its committees, and was for a number of years a member of the committees of the Patients' and Prisoners’ Aid Society, and the Cancer Campaign Fund. In the early davs of Association football he played that game, and he also played lawn tennis and bowls. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs T. C. Fraser, and a son. Captain Ronald Easton (overseas).
