GAS SHORTAGE

AUCKLAND POSITION SERIOUS (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Mar. 25. ‘ The gas position is likely to become very serious unless we get more coal by Tuesday morning,” said the manager of the Auckland Gas Company, Mr R. Worley, to-day. Stocks were so low, he said, that in the past two or three days only Westport steam coal, which was not satisfactory for gas producing, had been used. He estimated that this stock would last on a restricted basis until Wednesday morning. In the meantime, he added, a vessel with 700 tons of gas coal, which had been in Auckland for several days, was still discharging timber stowed over the coal, and the Kartigi. which had been expected to leave Grcymouth on Friday evening, was still delayed.
