MONTHLY MEETING | The monthly meeting of the Otago 1 Hospital Board last night was attended 1 by Dr D. G. McMillan (chairman), I Mesdames W. A. Ross and D. G. McMil- | lan, and Messrs A. A. Reid, A. F. 1 Quelch J. W Dove, John Bennetts, | A. Steel, and Dr M. F. Blain. I As a result of representations from g the Southland Board, the chairman and I Mr Quelch were appointed a sub-corn- | mittee of the board to meet the South- 1 land representatives on Tuesday after- g noon. „ | The resignation, as from March 31, | of Dr Noel H. North as house surgeon 1 at the Dunedin Hospital was accepted. g A resolution was adopted approving B the action of the chairman in convey- | ing the sympathy of the board to the 1 Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) in the | death of Mrs Fraser. | Hospital Statistics | Hospital statistics as follows were 1 received and noted:—Patients m Hos- ■ pital at January 31, 411; patients ad- g mitted during February, 587; total H treated, 998; discharged, recovered 331, I relieved 198, unrelieved 36; died, 33; g remaining as at February 28, 401; g operations (minor and major), 284; out- g patients (general sections), 2433; tuber- I culosis patients, 191; physio-therapy ■ (in and out), 3750; X-ray Department I (diagnostic), 1275; Metabolic Depart- B ment, 55; radium therapy, 27. S Salary Increases 1 1 Salary increases to employees not | covered by awards were considered in | committee in relation to the recent R raising of standard rates of pay, and |i a number of revisions were approved. g Local Authority Levies | Levies on local authorities as re- g commended by the Budgeting Com- H mittee were considered in committee g and adopted as follows (last years E figures being given in parentheses). |g Maintenance, £60,880 (£54,976); capi- I tal. £18.497 (£20,000);—total, £79,377 | (£74,986). Government subsidies for | maintenance this year were £63,374 g compared with £54,273 last year and g for capital purposes £18,497, against | £20,000 last year. | Annual Grants ft; Annual grants were approved as fol- I lows: —Patients and Prisoners’ Aid So- | ciety, £25; Citizens’ Day Nursery As- | soeiation £25; Dunedin Voluntary i Blood Transfusion Society, £SO; St. g John Ambulance Association, £1275.- g Higher Rale Foreshadowed |] The chairman said that next year fa the board would be faced with con- gi siderably increased expenditure, in- H eluding from £SOOO to £9OOO for salary | and wages increases, added costs of gj the new X-ray block, and increased H bed space. This meant that it would H be necessary to raise an additional M £4400 per annum, which represented g| Ad in the £ on the rates. In view of | the added service offering he did not g| think that the public would object to 1 the increase in costs. |
