CHILDREN’S REST HOMES

TWENTY-SIXTH ANNUAL MEETING

The twenty-sixth annual meeting of the Children’s Rest Home Residential Nurseries was held yesterday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) occupied the chair. The annual report stated that since the home in Highgate had been taken over by the Otago Hospital Board, the boarding-out system had been used entirely for the society’s work. In the opinion of the manager (Mr S. Dunkley) this system was better for the children than institutional life. During the year 136 children had been boarded out, and no deserving case had been turned away. The health of the children had been good. The committee, was greatly indebted to the fosterparents, and to the honorary medical adviser (Mr W. H. Borrie) for his services. The committee looked forward to a continuance of help from the public. Legacies received were added to the Endowment Fund in order to provide a regular income to meet part of the yearly expenditure. A history of the work since its inception in 1918 had been completed and published. Tribute by the Mayor Reference to the excellent work being carried on by the Rest Home was made by the Mayor, who moved the adoption of the report. The home had been established 26 years ago, he said, and since then notable service had been given to children and mothers. Mr Cameron added that the number of organisations, mainly voluntary, operating in Dunedin for the benefit of the community was surprisingly ’large. He expressed pleasure at seeing present Mr F. W. Knight, a committee member, who had taken a very keen interest in the homes for a number of years. He congratulated the manager on the work he was doing and also 'referred to the good work of the matron, Mrs V. Tate. Mr W. E. Earnshaw seconded the motion, which was carried. The manager reported that the society had from a small beginning gradually built up assets which, at the present time, were worth approximately £22,000. He added that Mr A. R. White had been appointed to drive the society’s car and to assist with the work. Officers Elected The committee was re-elected as follows: Messrs F. W. Knight (chairman), W. R. Brinsley, W. E. Earnshaw, L. W. Green, R. C. B. Greenslade. R. Dawson. W. Ellis, and S. Dunkley: honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Crooks: honorary auditors, Messrs Mitson, Bell, and Co. A vote of thanks to the staff was moved by Mr Greenslade, and Mr Knight moved a vote of thanks to the chairman. •
