LIQUOR ON TRAINS

RAILWAY OFFICER CROSSEXAMINED SUPPLY OF BOTTLE-OPENERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 21. At the sitting of the Licensing Commission to-day Mr H.. A. Steers, a railway officer, cross-examined by Mr R. Hardie Boys for the New Zealand Alliance, admitted that the provision of bottle-openers on trains would have the effect of encouraging the drinking of beer on trains, which was prohibited by the war regulations. The department did its best to co-operate with the police in regard to the consigning of liquor to the country. When there was doubt, reference was always made to the police, particularly in the case of Maori consignees. Replying to Mr F. G. Young, M.L.C., a member of the commission, witness said he was aware that liqtior was served at stations and on trains abroad, apparently without.abuse.
