DANSEY’S PASS

In a statement to the Waitaki County Council yesterday morning, Cr J. S. Adams said that the Waitaki portion of the Dansey’s Pass road compared more than favourably with the portion on the other side of the saddle. The road was in good order, but if an all-weather road was to be put through, it would be a natural affair, and the Government would have to do it.

A few years ago, said Cr Adams, tins matter was taken up by the department, which had placed a good sum on the estimates for the road, and the Waitaki County Council was prepared to contribute £SOO to the cost, and do the maintenance. The Maniototo County Council, however, would not do anything, and the proposal lapsed. If the road was taken up the tortuous Maercwhenua River it would by-pass five out of seven of the Waitaki ratepayers there, and the council had to study the interests of the ratepayers. The council should maintain the road as it was doing, said Cr Adams, but it would not be justified in spending a Jot of the ratepayers’ money on it.
