ASSIGNED TO MacARTHUR

AUSTRALIAN STRIKING FORCE FOR USE WHEN POSSIBLE SAN FRANCISCO (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) Mar. 19. “Australia has assigned a splendid striking force to General MacArthur for use when strategically possible,” said Mr F. M. Forde at a press conference. “ These troops are in addition to those fighting the Japanese in bypassed islands.” Mr Forde paid a tribute to General MacArthur as the outstanding military leader of the age. Australia's role in the Pacific war was to be determined by General MacArthur, who recently conferred with Mr Curtin. Mr Forde added that Australia was entering the United Nations’ peace discussions with an open mind and the will to co-oper-ate with the other Allies.
