NOTES ON PRINCIPAL EVENTS
(Special) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 18. Elaine Travis monopolised the betting in the Wyndham Cup, but she compounded badly at the home turn after trying to lead all the way. She lost several lengths at the start, but raced into the lead at tlie end, of two furlongs. With a mile to go she was clear of a close-running field, in which Cheval d’Or and Convincer were right up, and Royal Fortune had make up most of his handicap. Royal Fortune and Cheval d’Or challenged Elaine Travis at the top of the straight, and in a good race home Cheval d’Or stayed on to beat Royal Fortune by half a length. Convincer was finishing on in third place, and Elaine Travis was a poor fourth. Quite Happly could not handle the going and was always well out of it, while Monagh Leagh lost 100yds at the start. Juvenile Stakes Copper Trail was slow to hit out in the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes, but after covering a lot of ground he raced into the lead with Darrington Hall with six furlongs to go. He was first into the straight, and won with a lot to spare. : Clydeside, who was slow away, made up a lot of ground at the home turn and just when he looked like being second, Darrington Hall got up to make a dead heat of it. Master Mariner showed some speed in racing up to the leaders at the home turn, but he did not sustain his run. Caudray was a good fourth, ahead of Quite Certain. The Menzies Handicap
Sure Harvest spreadeagled the field in the Menzies Handicap. He took charge with six furlongs to go, and from then on did not £ivc the others a chance, and finally won by 20 lengths. Logan Max put in a promising run down the back the last time and trailed Sure Harvest to the straight. He stayed on to beat Ginger Joe for second. Voco Power was fourth after being the early leader, and Mistydale stopped badly over the last half-mile. The Final Handicap Royal Fortune showed rare gameness in winning the Final Handicap. He was well back in fifth place at the half-mile and was conceding the leaders a good start at tire home turn. Over the last furlong he held too many guns for Princess Maritza and Happy King, who were in the firing line right through. The favourite, Bonny Axworth, was a moderate fourth after being slow away. Elaine Travis was always one of the leaders, but could not get an opening in the straight.
