Vice-Regal

The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall will leave Wellington today to pay an official visit to Auckland.

Brigadier L. M. Inglis left for Timaru by the express on Saturday. Mr T. O'Shea left 1 for Auckland on Saturday on University business. Captain S. Wilson was a passenger the express on Saturday, bound for Palmerston North. Mr A. S. Rusden, district officer in Canterbury for the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-establishment League, returned to Christchurch on Saturday. Notification has been received from Wellington that the name of Gerald J. Smith was inadvertently omitted from th-; list of successful candidates in the public service entrance examination.

Mr J. W. Wood was elected president of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce at the annual meeting of the chamber on Friday. Mr W. A. Hadlee, the New Zealand and Canterbury representative cricketer, who is coming to Dunedin shortly, was given a reception by the Christchurch High School Old Boys’ Association last Thursday night. Tributes were paid to his work for cricket, both as a player and as an administrator. Mr C. Luney made a presentation to him on behalf of the Old Boys’ Association. The special correspondent of the New Zealand Press Association in a message from London states that an unusual honour has been conferred upon the New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr W. J. Jordan. He is the first person from overseas to be elected to the Executive’ Court of the City of London Liverymen and Sheriffs. One of the court’s duties is to elect the Lord Mayor of London. Mr Jordan was eligible for this distinction since he is a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Girdlers which has close ties with the Dominion, and regularly entertains New Zealanders on New Zealand Day. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner on Saturday were: Mr A. Steele and Mr W. G. V. Fernie for Christchurch, Mr E. C. Smith, Mr S. Park, Mr A. E. Gardner, Mr A. Steven, and Lady Hunter for Wellington, Mr H. Hunter, Miss C. Holmes, and Mr J. Welch for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were: Mr and Mrs T. G. ifardie from Christchurch. Mr L. L. Tuckett, Mr T. C. Coull, Miss M. Mitchell, Mrs H. Blundell, and Mr R. J. Gilmour from Wellington, Dr and Mrs K. McCormack and Mrs B. Matheson from Auckland. Passengers who left for Invercargill were; Miss I. C. Swanson, L.A.C. W. E. Smith, Mr J. P. Bell, Mr W. Griffiths, Mr W. Key, Mr and Mrs W. H. Kirkby, Mr R. J. Gilmour, Mr and Mrs T. G. Hardie.
