AUSTRALIAN LIQUOR LAWS

FAR-REACHING REFORMS LEGISLATION PROPOSED SYDNEY, March 15. Legislation to effect far-reaching reforms in liquor laws would be introduced during the next session of the State Parliament, said the Premier of New South Wales, Mr W. J. McKeil, to-day. He emphasised that, while legislation would be passed, reforms could not be given effect to under wartime conditions, but they would be carried out immediately normal conditiqns returned. The reforms would involve a redistribution of licences and the reconstruction of premises. The Leader of the State Opposition, Mr Weaver, said it seemed the Premier was hastily shutting up Parliament to stifle the rising tide of resentment ever the liquor position. The Government’s indifference was causing deep public concern, and was definitely encouraging a widespread racket ring and anarchy. Scoundrels and crooks, sponging on honest citizens and reaping untaxed fortunes from the liquor rackets were among the persons the police believed were ouilding up stocks of firearms for underworld use.
